Sightseeing near the Castel in Naples

Museo Cappella Sansevero - The Sansevero Chapel Museum is one of the most popular museums in the city and is only only 15 minutes away by taxi, just behind the Federico II University.  See here the famed statue of Veiled Christ, see the skeletons in the cellar, literally, and understand the religious meaning of the many sculptures and paintings on display.  Open Mondays, and Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30am until 6:30am, it closes at 2:00pm on Sundays with the last entry 20 minutes before closing. Closed on Tuesdays. A ticket is 7 Euros with discounts for children, schools and those holding the Artecard.  website

Piazza del Plebiscito - Just 15 minutes walk away you will find one of the most impressive squares of any Italian city. With the Basilica Reale San Francesco di Paola on one side, and the Royal Palace of Naples on the other it is ringed by important historic buildings.  Days of culture and learning can be experienced in this square alone! 

The Bourbon Tunnel - These impressive underground structures, Tunnel Borbonico, were first built under by the Bourbons in 1859, but it wasn't until World War II that they saw substantial use, as air raid shelters. Today they are a fascinating peek into several periods of the city history, with detritus from all parts of society ending up here. Take the tour to really understand the importance of these historic structures. Just 10 minutes in a taxi or 20 minutes walk along the seafront, then inland via Via Cesario Console, through the Piazza del Plebiscito, and through some side streets. Catacombe di San Gennaro - Located in the northen part near the magnificent Capodimonte Park this is just one of a set of Catacombs, but is the most popular to visit. There are two layers from the second and third century and contain the Crypt of the Bishops and the basilica maior which is a true church underground. Still actively being excavated these thousands of years old structures really show how the early church had to hide in the city, yet still flourished. Guided tours are available on the hour every day from 10:00am in the morning until the last one at 5:00pm. On Sundays the last is at 1:00pm. Fees are 8 Euros for a standard ticket but reduced for children, seniors and students.  website

SpaccaNapoli - This long straight Roman road splits the city with a line of historic buildings, squares and shops.   It starts at Piazza Ges� Nuovo and goes north east through the city for more than 1km. All great walking and seeing along the way. It has three names as it moves through the city, first Via Benedetto Croce, then Via S. Biagio dei Librai and finally Via Vicaria Vecchia.  Also check out the parallel Via Tribunali.  The closest point is the Gesu Nuovo which is more than half an hours walk so it is best to take a taxi which will get you there in just 10 minutes.
